episodes 96/97/98 honeymoon trail

na tumhari baat sunni hai aur na tumhari shakal dekhni hai... i don't care ki tum kahan jaati ho, kya karti ho... i don't give a damn.

not that he'd lied. in that rush of anger, he really thought he meant it. he didn't want to see her face, nor talk to her, he didn't care where she went, what she did, he didn't give a damn. the mood was very rhett butler, must say. scarlett had gone too far.

anger. his friend, his foe, his mate. that anger was needed if a little boy whose mother was torn from him suddenly and terribly, whose world was scattered like a string of pearls, snapped; the pearls falling and crashing, their sound sharp, repetitive, on the hard floor echoing... if that little boy were to survive this calamity, he needed to find something within him. the boy found his rage and made it his own.

and today, a young woman who intrigued him with her strange ways, who stayed in his head long after she'd left, who came up with the most bizarre plans to get him to do what he didn't want, and try as he might he couldn't get her out of his life, today, she had driven him straight round the bend on a road which he thought would be serene and uneventful.

"thodi hi der mein sochogi, ki kaash tumne mujhe  jaane diya hota..." in a short while you'll wish you'd let me go, he promised. khushi's pranks had not only completely thrown his nainital plans into disarray, now, to ensure that he doesn't stalk off without eating, without a car, in a foul mood and brooding, khushi had done a super filmi thing. "nahiiin!" she'd practically declaimed, gathered the crowds around and said, he can't leave her like that, it's not even been two hours and 24 minutes (er, khushi... natural born melodrama script specialist, that's what you are) that the two had eloped and got married... and all because the food was too hot, he was leaving? not her fault... aunty ji was to blame. poor aunty ji looked ashamed for causing such trouble. uncle ji gathered large turbaned men to bar the man from leaving, editors made a nice chutney of the scene showing different sets of large men from different camera angles, but none the less, what khushi had set out to do was achieved.

asr's adios plans were foiled. leaving a tawny eyed creature in orange red anger.

he'd watched the theatrics nonplussed. this is not a man who likes such campy things, most of all he will not tolerate someone trying to get the better of him. and there's khushi, raising eyebrows, smiling as if to say, "got ya." oh this is intolerable.

i must say, i understood his ire perfectly. and as the bhangra proceeded and the midway fun of that highly unsubtle nature that seems to be dhaba fare got going, i was glad to see a nasty expression enter his eyes, and a mean lopsided smile take shape. he had another idea and this one would not please drama queen. the king of gussa meant to win this round.

"aur agar shaadi aaj hui hai, toh suhag raat bhi aaj hi hogi na?"
so if the marriage took place today, the suhag raat must also happen tonight, right? khushi had not remembered how shatir the hungry angry young man could be. what?!!! wedding night? aunty jiii uncle jiii...

his "chale?" was a bit different from the tender one just a while back when her dupatta had fallen and he'd shown how keenly he understood her needs and respected them. he slung her on his shoulder with one easy tug, caveman style, and took her, protesting screaming kicking, to the "honeymoon suite."

there in  the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere, he let his anger take over... "shhh!" he spat out. peremptory. at the end of tether.

you started the drama, i'll end it. today you've crossed all limits... before i wake up tomorrow morning, disappear from here. i don't give a damn. and he left her alone in the room and walked off to get some sleep in a comfortable bed.

she sat there petrified, the lights went out, she was frozen in terror. in a second the mood had been expertly changed from fun and light to dark and tense.

"devi maiyya raksha karna..."
thoughts of the night at the guest house in my mind. the hours ticked by, she sat alone in fear.

he wakes up, the day registers. first name on his lips... "khushi" enquiring, then getting worried.. "khushi?!!" memory comes, and an expletive... oh shit. in an instant, he's up, the quilt flung off, quickness in every move. urgency.

where is she.

"aaj bhi hume tez gadi se darr lagta hai... hume andhere mein jaane se dar lagta  hai," she's scared of speeding cars and the dark even now, he is horrified as he recalls.

this was the thing about his anger. when it came it blinded him to everything completely. perhaps taking his mind to the state it was in on a day from hell. everything went blank, all he knew was to hit out against everything. go away... go away... take this terrible reality away possibly was trapped in silent screams within him. it blocked out everything.

everybody.

even khushi.

but when he calmed down, the enormity of his actions swamped him, making him feel terrible, guilty, just downright bad. i don't know why i am like this he will say to la soon, he does this without thinking or knowing... "anjaane me"... but when he realises what he's done he is just so ashamed of his actions.

he found  her. he also realised she'd been alone through the night, without light or fan, sitting... and as if that weren't enough, she had high fever.

all because he was angry. "dammit" under the breath.

and the cave man turned into the gentlest being on earth as he lifted her and carried her to a comfortable place, lay her down tenderly and soothed her fever away.

"khushi, khushi,"
how can a monster sound so sweet.

"amma... babu ji..." khushi needs her own, her care givers, delirious she seems to be. his eyes darken, sadness at his own behaviour and worry about her in them.

"khushi, uthkar doodh pilo... phir dawai khani hai..." khushi, get up and drink your milk, you have to have your medicine after that...

a pair of most caring arms lifted khushi up by the shoulders and brought her close toward his heart, looked as though he just wanted to gather her up and embrace her, enfold her with his arms, like the most precious thing life had given him. maybe the director had slowed down motion, maybe the cinematographer had got the perfect magnification and angle, perhaps the lighting was perfect, but could just that have created that sense of drawing into oneself in the scene? or was it the phenomenal understanding of a moment in a characters's life that somehow barun and sanaya seemed to have.

rabba vey and a gust of wind, rustling by, as he lifts her up, a scene i'll remember long.

shashi gupta knows the truth.

he could get angry, he could walk away, he could  shout and ignore, but he could not ever not love his drama queen. she could call him names, she could fight, she could even hate him, but she could never not love her gussa boy.

sunlight streams in through the window. he sits by her and tends to her, bathing her fevered brow, watching over her...

he begins to move his hand away and she turns her face, resting a soft childlike cheek against his hand, nestling in trustingly. in the silence of his heart there's a truth, when no one's watching, he won;'t push it away. his heart moves before his head can. she snuggles more against his palm, he slides down from the bed, to keep her comfortable, leave his hand where she wants it.

he remembers how she'd fed him the previous day. all attention and immense care.

he remembers the threat, get out before i get up tomorrow morning.

i'm sorry, khushi, i'm so sorry, the words fill the air, so still all around. not a trace of anger or worldliness in him now. just a boy, a girl, and a real feeling. what else is a honeymoon.

he reaches to gently ease his hand out and remembers a tear, rolling down from her eyes. his arms around lavanya, a tear sliding down khushi's cheek, the cheek resting so peacefully in his palm right now. why did she cry?

why do i feel at this moment, he knew, he knew exactly what was going on, within both of them.

she's better, they are leaving their "suite," a gentle air about him, concerned,

"khushi?... tum... theek toh ho na?" khushi, you're ok, aren't you?

"hum dilli wapas apne aap chale jaayenge..."
i'll get back to delhi on my own, she offers, obviously still hurt by his ruthless anger. he's about to tell her not to be like that, he couldn't leave her... or so his body language indicates.

and the jeep with wild people arrives.

asr and khushi confront the goondas. babuji confronts shyam.

right versus wrong... pure versus evil.

a fascinatingly well constructed segment of intercutting between the two scenarios. as shyam takes on his most virulent form, dhaiya ho begins to play. his music from day one. which clearly means, that day when he met khushi as protector, even then he was not. he was always something cringingly dark, convoluted, and coiled. some day we'll construct the perfect story for him.

at the dhaba, as asr's anger is triggered by a man pushing khushi, his music holds sway.

both men are willing to kill someone... for khushi. but only one of them loves her. yet he leaves her alone in darkness without a covering the whole night. it's complicated... maybe because it's real?

"haan mar daloonga, isski himmat kaisi hui tumhe haath ..." yes, i'll kill this man, how dare he touch you... you are mine asserts his heart, his gut, mine, and i will always be yours, holding you loving you, making sure no one hurts you... mine... do you hear me? and don't you forget that, dammit. but his head can't hear at the moment. too much anger. his friend. his foe. his mate.

he's beating a man relentlessly, kicking, pummeling, hurling, hitting his head against the floor... a hand on his shoulder, and he returns to reality.

98

blood on knuckle, a shaken man at the wheel. he has nothing to say to her. silent. he remembers her voice rising, "aap ko ho kya gaya?" what's happened to you.

he has no answer, just questions plague him, "kya ho gaya tha mujhe? why did i react like that?" what happened to me what happened to me what happened... his mind buzzes. te answer his heart and gut knew, his mind, his dimaag had not yet heard. his anger was protecting his heart, reflex action. his buddy, his temper. no nothing must hurt his fragile heart again, not if his gussa has anything to do with it.

tense silence. khushi chirps in, "dilli aa gayi..."

not a word.

finally she can't take it, she has never seen him like this. all through, despite all her nautanki, it's all been about her wanting to bring good things to him really. a little pyaar time with la, when that failed, a little pakoda to calm him, he won't have it... then some food at the dhaba, something nourishing, he hasn't eaten the whole day and he fainted in the morning. but he wouldn't listen. then the nahiiin natak, so that he wouldn't be stuck alone on the highway, minus car, awfully hungry. always about him. her laad governor whom she even in the third person calls, "aap" with a strange kind of respect, and yells at as though she has every right to, she has no idea why her eye wells up with a tear when he holds another, or why her expression turns to melancholy when someone else speaks of marrying him... all she knows is that she is worried about him, this anger, this out of control fury is no good for him. and if it's not good for him, she can't bear it... it's not good for her.

"dekhiye aap kuch toh boliye... hum jaante hain ki humne aapko bahut pareshaan kiya, lekin aap kuchh bol nahin rahe hain toh hume kuchh ajeeb sa lag raha hai... (ajeeb, again that word, it is the defining word for the nature of their love story, along with hamesha and vishwas and dammit maybe?) waise toh aap hamesha hume daant-te hain, chillate hain, hume apni aukat ki yaad dilate hain...waise kariye na. iss tarah  aap ko chup baith-te hue humne kabhi dekha nahin hain..."look, please say something... i know i have driven you crazy, but you're not talking and that feels so strange... otherwise you scold me, shout, (and then remembering, she adds with enthusiasm), remind me of my status... why don't you do all that. i've never seen you sit quietly like this...

"aap kuchh toh boliye na... hume daant lo... daant lo aap..."
say something... just scold me...

"just shut up," cold silver ice in his voice.

"shut up? devi maiya ki jai ho
," she's relieved, delighted to be insulted, at least he spoke. he hasn't spoken in three hours... she makes the mistake of reminding him of what he did, prattles away, if he could do this to a guy because he pushed her, what would he do if the guy dared hit her...

"get out." the words shot out like a bullet.

he didn't want to be reminded of his loss of control. why was he behaving like this, what was the matter with him? arnav singh raizada has never felt this sensation before. it feels alien, scary, threatening to him.

"kyun ab humne kya kiya?"
what did i do now? she has been here before, she is flummoxed but not unduly shocked... till his second, through gritted teeth, expanded, emphatic:

"get... out."

she is hurt, terribly, again. he slaps money into her hand, brusquely helps her take off her seat belt. classic that struggle of hers with the belt, all her agony in that jerky unfocussed movement, even shyam letting her down never hurt her perhaps as much as this man's blow hot blow cold. she leaves.

when he enters home, restless, seething, confused, grazing anger within, the screenplay uses a cute, wacky foil to contrast with his state of mind and throw it into relief. op. all gleaming smiley face asking for chhotey saab's attention, getting entangled with him like a playful kitten (perfect man for khushi to play ankh micholi with when she gets bored being rich at the raizada home). he tells op to get off his back and enters his den. a question searing.

"kal tak main usse pareshan tha toh phir aaj kya ho gaya hai mujhe?" till yesterday i was irritated with her, then what happened to me today?

even when you were "pareshaan" you averted your gaze to hand her her dupatta, turned away to give her privacy. even when you were angry, you carried her to a room and left her in a safe place, not in the jungle. when you realised your folly, you rushed to find her, mortified at the state you discovered her in, when her cheek rested on your palm you only felt the flow of tenderness within, not a single instinct to draw away, when you gathered her up you were caring toward a girl who had driven you batty through a harrowing journey... and then when a  man touched her, you lost it. yet you haven't a  clue what's happening to you.

as you didn't all those times you couldn't stop thinking of her... after bersarai and the sindoor incident, the day you ran like a maniac to find her in a crumbling edifice, the sunday afternoon you thought she wasn't coming back and ached, the endless times you repeated to yourself she's going away to lucknow for hamesha and couldn't think of anything else. you put up with her mad plans, get angry but can't get rid of her from your mind, you can't bear to see a tear in her eyes, i could go on.

yet you don't know what's happening to you. i guess the drive from faraq nahin padta to faraq padta is an arduous one, sometimes in the middle of it is a honeymoon suite.

96/97/98

episodes 286/287/288 as breath falls (vm)

love slipped out and was free finally. it landed a flying kick on dread, shoved terror away with a lethal punch in the gut, grabbed the collar of betrayal and said don't mess with me. then pointed the gun at fear's head and rasped through gritted teeth, "paani hai, plan barbaad ho gaya?!"

a long time ago they'd got him. on a night when he was too vulnerable, too young to fight back. they trapped him in a scream and locked him right in. a heart that ached, that tore and ripped, hardened instead, combating demons that wouldn't let him go. he couldn't walk away, they took him and walled him in.

they planned to set him on fire some day.

but then arrived water laughing and babbling like a brook, speeding on a scooter hell bent on reaching her destination like a river, a girl from gomti sadan. she raced to meet her destiny...

and down from the sky came a man called ocean and said he never misses his mark. little knowing, he was the nishana, a river was on its way to find her ocean.

as i watched the terrifically well shot fight sequences and chase and the magnificent clifftop scenes of these episodes, i could hardly think. every second was thrilling and then you were thrown straight into the grandeur of a man and a woman and a feeling melded with air water earth fire.

was this not a movie? a tacky hindi tv serial merely?

shyam realised he had been duped by khushi and gave the order to burn the place down, set asr on fire... the horror of that moment.

his wife shrilly wailed to her aunt that she was hallucinating even as she clung on to her vaham, her essential hallucination of a perfect husband... the ever practical aunt brought her beloved niece home and called out to the servant for water. the servant was named after god, of course.

"hari prakas, paani deo jaldi se!" and god seemed to bring water raining down on arnav singh raizada. rocky opened a window and hurled a fluid from a plastic jerrycan at asr. he was drenched... and i was shocked thinking that was diesel.

the first time i saw this scene i had no idea a switch had been made. but he smelled the liquid, being the ever pragmatic and focused man he is with a curious mind that never stops ticking. he knew this was no gasoline. yet he waited to see what the goons were up to, he had tackled a couple of them earlier, but now there were many more, he had to strategise.

what was interesting was that ticking mind.

he had actually allowed it to be bludgeoned on the night of the terrace, and stopped thinking... making a terrible mistake. surrounded by every demon of his, he had screamed again and they had reinforced the trap. water had not won that night, darkness had.

but this time he was not going to just give in to death as he had at 14, nor to fear as on that other night. this time, he was somehow better armed to take it on.

he had to meet her in sheesh mahal, didn't he. and she had to find her way to him in some strange and unpredictable way, didn't she. that evening too there had been a switch... she was not supposed to be on that ramp. yet she was. and she fell into his arms, crash landing and just refused to disappear after that... running after him at the dargah, insisting she'd work in his office, making deals with his girl friend to stay on and teach her... as he said that night before rakhi, she just refused to go away.

to break down that hard wall of terrible adversaries... lallan, rocky, stand back for you are nothing compared to dread, death, terror, ache, fear, pain, anger, betrayal... to vanquish them, he needed to be reached, touched, brought back to life. water is fluid, it flows into places solids can't, it seeps in through cracks and crevices and finds a way to get in, stay.

she did find her way into him. the day he smiled at her antics, was perhaps the first day he took a step toward fighting every demon off. and no matter how much he tried to not feel for her, believing she had betrayed his trust even, nothing worked, she kept flowing in... on laughter, smiles, her utter upbeat rhythm, her sanka, her sweetness. he could not resist. and as he said to her just a couple of days ago... she had found him, haan, mujhe dhoond liya tumne. was that not really about her making her way, against all odds, right into his being? his heart?

when lallan's matches fizzled out, he knew only one person could have made that switch... the little sizzler who would not be put down, never fizzle out... and with a smile of wonder and pride came, "khushi kumari gupta singh raizada!"

she popped up from behind packing cases, gleeful at having succeeded, and thanking devi maiyya, for a few moments so much the sparkling girl of the first episode. fresh and full of trust.

then arrived shyam and his disgusting frenzy. seemed he'd have loved her more if he'd known she were so twisted. an interesting conversation about how "gire hui" was she. and a bold assertion by her that for her husband's sake she would fall even further if necessary, because she loved him... so much. but perhaps what i enjoyed hearing most was her cutting tone when she told him she was nothing like him, shyam... nothing.

the first time i saw these episodes, and this time too, shyam made practically no impression... his story was weak, his acting flat. and given the beauty unfolding elsewhere, i really did not care.

but before i dump him, i wonder what was that about "pandrah din." asr had got only fifteen days to live... now that was done. was this in some way a reference to the dark period in one's life? in crooner, priya had talked about the fifteen days standing for a "paksha"... there are two in each month, one dark/krishna when the moon wanes, the other bright/shukla when it waxes. is this a reference really to the dark phase in arnav singh raizada's life ending though it is flipped to sound the other way round and the dark one, shyam/krishna, speaks of it?

the ocean had decided he needed to meet his life force. arnav singh raizada was going to come out if his wife was out here. the fabulous fight between ugly hoods and a beautiful man that ensued was so gracefully filmed, him throwing off of barriers and flowing toward us, almost like a tide coming in... a sense of freedom in it.

a stunning communication when he burst out of the godown and standing on the verandah caught sight of her for the first time. almost instantly a smile flashed, no matter they were in the middle of absolute danger. and she smiled back ever so slightly right back at him... a connection, a giving of breath to each other... of life... a moment of immortality... and rabba vey of course was the name of this moment.

he didn't see shyam, in a fairly well directed placing of actors and camera angles, this got done. and onto the ballet like chase, a terribly handsome man with hair tossed by the wind and a search in his eyes in an open top rugged vehicle followed by a clutch of murderous men on bikes, while in front raced the small half man who so wanted to be the big guy with the girl, who now feared even less, now that her arnav ji was here and determined to reach her.

she had saved him, now it was his turn. i wondered why we had to come all the way to death for their story to complete. the words "jeetey ji," while one is alive... was used by both shyam and khushi. as long as she were alive, she would not let any harm come to arnav ji, she spat out at shyam as 287 began. shyam vowed what asr hadn't given him while he lived, he would give him by dying... khushi ji.

but then i felt, it had to come to death. and betrayal.

for it had all started with death and betrayal... of a loved one, and by a loved one. and it had to come back to the death and betrayal of a loved one and by a loved one for arnav singh raizada to be free. and perhaps that's why there had to be that misunderstanding, where he believed the one he loved had broken his trust... he would have to grapple with that... and today he would have to see her in the grip of death.

fire destroys fire... to catch a thief set a thief. and so his mother's death and his father's breaking of trust... khushi brought both spectres back to him. she the instrument that would let him live again. she that key... the mannat key, i suddenly thought. he had said "phenk do" but she wouldn't.  she was that key on which a mannat stayed... maybe a dying mother's wish or am i being melodramatic?

a truly beautiful tale springs ridiculously elevating surprises at you... in these episodes ipk did that again and again. a moving story had been brewing in someone's heart... i am grateful that despite all the horrors that the trp chase brought upon us, the real story of ipk did not plunge to its death, it only seemed like that. it breathed dammit breathed. and a love story lived on.

what he had lost to death and betrayal, today he would have the chance to win all that back... but would he be able to?

need i have worried?

how viciously the goons had tried to hold him down, but he brought forth all his physical might and prevailed. shyam gagged and bound her and left her to die under the tyres of his jeep... but he kept his head and swerved in time to save her. he watched over her as the hoods caught up, and again fought with all he was when they circled him like vultures. but then he saw what he never ever thought he'd have to see.

khushi plunging to her death.

he forgot everything, he ran to save her. they tried to stop him, but he was not going to let them. lallan should thank his lucky stars, asr was too focused on khushi to bother to pull the trigger. he couldn't care less whether lallan died or not... khushi... where was khushi?

actually she had been on his mind from the moment he saw that water and realised it must have been her.

her name was on his lips constantly as he drove... and as she fell off the edge of the cliff.

khushi... khushi... khushiii had started already... he knew very well she couldn't hear him calling her from the car, then why was he saying her name? if we happen to be theist, the very name of god is considered powerful... to have the name on every breath is a form of praying, on the inhale, on the exhale... the name.

i did not count how many times he called her by her name... i just felt his devotion, his love, his conquest over himself... and the freedom within him. at long last.

in 286, we had been cooped up in a godown... in 287, it was the road... and now we reached the earth and the sky. rabba vey sang the wind, water flowed and washed away pain in untrammelled tears.

but before all that, again.. a smile. when he spotted her lying prone on the slope under a tree. his sister had commented on it earlier... this crazy girl who'd stop at nothing to reach him, perhaps the most precious gift she released in him was his smile. his laughter.

it made him happy, it made him strong.

how moving was the acting by barun sobti as arnav singh raizada felt every terror, fear, pain, hurt, horror, tear, ripping of a single thought. khushi is no more.

he has always feared the loss of a near one. he cannot face it... he cannot take it. a part of him ends every time he thinks of his mother's death.

and now, khushi is gone?

when he was 14, he could not do a thing about what happened. but this time he was damn well not going to let anything happen. he ran about wildly, calling her, he spotted her, he gathered her in his arms and pulled her up and he sat on mother earth cradling his love in his arms, reviving her, calling her, telling her to come back... he spoke to her constantly, his fear perhaps propelling him, but also his determination not to let her go.

talk to me, say something, khushi khushi khushiii... and then he saw her hand fall limp to the ground, the hand that always held him when he lifted her... fear rushed through him. he remembered moments when she had spoken of dying... a chill clutched his heart, he checked to see if she breathed, he tried to resuscitate her, he told her to speak to him dammit, this was not funny. he commanded her to breathe. breathe.

he pleaded and said, she couldn't do this to him...

for endless minutes he did all he could to get her back, there alone on a clifftop, no one around, no help for miles around... and the sky and the earth watched quietly.

he raged, he shouted, he seemed to be standing before the eternal and demanding she be brought back to him. every time  fear came, he fought it off and grew more strident in his call to her. he had tried to reassure her at first, how very tenderly he'd said, look, everything is alright, you're okay, i'm fine, we're safe... open your eyes, khushi, say something. he'd thought she would respond... did i see a little child in him for a moment then? almost asking his mother to open his eyes, look at him, come back? he has been to this terrifying place before.

then he grew more and more desperate... and fierce... refusing to give in.

he tried to massage warmth back into her palms, to find a sign of life.

nothing.

whatever he could do using his powers of reasoning and thinking he did. nothing worked. she was not breathing.

he was bereft, broken... and with a desperate love for her in his heart, he turned to only that feeling and lifted her still hand and put it where it belonged, on his heart... the place she had streamed into despite all the barriers and walls and met the ocean within. his deep, vast heart.

holding her close, letting his tears come, he let his head rest on hers... khushi, he murmured. this time perhaps sure, she would not answer...

hmmm?

the heart beat... their story was all about that after all. dhadkane. he was hers and she his... he seemed to give her her heart beat back by putting her hand on his...

in that heart beat perhaps today is a trust in life that was robbed a long while back.

when he heard her, for a moment, disbelief... and then a smile. yes, again a smile. arnav singh raizada has found a thousand different smiles with and for this love of his... each one says love in its own way...

she coughed as she started to breathe again, you could see a spray of saliva come and hit arnav singh raizada... why did that look so wonderful? felt real...

and then with the most incredulous joy he turned to her and held her.

even the way he put his arm around her seemed to have changed and become more nurturing... like she was the most precious thing ever. and indeed she was. she was perhaps that pearl that made the scattering, the bikhar jaana of his entire life bearable.

he sat with her in his arms, smiling, crying, just being thankful... a grace in these moments. and sitting up there on the clifftop, we seemed to move up another level in this love story... going even deeper into the nature of love and reaching upward with an ambitious lunge.

she looked at him and she too had to say his name first... to have him near, to be in his arms, after the hell she has gone through these past few weeks and the damnation of having to be near another man... and yet, i don't think for even a second khushi doubted that her arnav ji would reach her and save her. her calm, tired smile seemed to say that. she tried to speak, he said shh shh, no need to say anything.

the first time too i'd found that intriguing. and it was beautiful that he believed her without her having to say a single thing later when she accused her culprit.

on the bridge the other day he had not been able to believe her even as she told him everything. but today, after all they had been through, and after he had finally battled and wrestled with demons and was at last free... he really did not need to hear anything any more.

he put her dupatta back on her shoulders in a telling gesture. her dupatta always said many things and it had been the last thing he'd seen as she fell. as he placed it where it belonged he seemed to say, he'd protect her honour always.

as he went to pick her up, her hand did go up as it always had, right from that day at the guest house and she clutched his vest... oh the happiness on arnav singh raizada's face at that.

there was a sense of completion up there beneath the clear sky. the young man who had held darkness in his eyes, now his irises held a bright new light and the girl who had looked up at him petrified in his arms one night, now stroked his cheek lying comfortably in his arms, becoming his, making him her own.he carried her and walked to the car, a temple in the background, white pristine. the shots had a sense of the sacred and a larger than life feel, something elemental, big. like the feelings within, like the feelings without.

on this clifftop, for the first time he said, though he did not complete the sentence perhaps because he couldn't, not when she was in this state... but he did realise clearly... main tumhare b-

i can't live without you.

if not for a great plot or even a rational basis for kidnap, for using it to reach this point, many thanks to the writers.

ipk would not be what it is without the acting of barun sobti and sanaya irani... these episodes again said that repeatedly to me. they made ipk breathe... even when everything tried to throw it over the cliff.

episodes 284/285 a tale of two wives

"chhor dijiye anjali ji ko!"
leave anjali ji!

"matlab aap kehna chahti hain ki hum... anjali ko chhor de?"
you mean to say, i... should leave anjali?

finally, she did say those words. she actually persuaded shyam to leave anjali, or so he thought.

and finally another person became the target of another mu. what manorama raizada saw through her binocs and heard with her own ears were not what she thought they were.

once more, the rational mind, the five senses didn't read right.

almost the same scene had been witnessed by a young man full of hope standing at a terrace doorway once and everything had fallen apart that evening.

in a curious echo of that moment, mami ji misunderstood what she saw... and decided, exactly as her nephew had done, that phatee saree and damad ji's truth had to be told to anjali. instantly. no tarrying.

like a parallel of that evening of the wedding, she dropped everything and rushed to apprise her niece, despite a sprained ankle and an aching heart. she couldn't believe what she had seen... khushi had just asked shyam to divorce anjali and he had not raved and ranted, instead said, he would do exactly that... and she just knew she had to protect the niece she loved so much.

love.

at the centre of so much in ipk. how love sits in us, how it makes us do what we do, how it has so many sides, how really it is almost impossible to categorise and name.

even shyam, in the monologue in his mind that played as he spoke to khushi, was planning to seize all that was arnav singh raizada's, especially the object of his "love"... khushi.

didi ki saut... at this point, a part of that format seemed to be playing before us. such a direct assault on anjali, even if it is all just a plan to correct the mistake khushi had made by getting papers signed by asr for shyam.

i guess for the conflict at the centre to grow more intense and pivotal tis had to happen. but i felt the story wasn't strong enough to establish that that was the only thing khushi could have said to get him to sign.

shyam had switched the a papers, in 285, we saw how she did exactly the same and got what she wanted. this switching of things, people, perhaps another ipk trait. khushi that first night was not supposed to be on that ramp.

another thing i find very interesting and intriguing in ipk is how all sorts of things set up reflections and recall. dialogues are often repeated in slightly different words, shyam and asr seem like two opposite expressions of an idea of an independent individual. floating fabric, dupatta or curtain, say many things.

and now this stool.

scene moved to a warehouse and a taught elegant man in a vest and black pants working up sweat. he was doing presses as though in a well equipped gym when all he had in reality was a wooden stool lying flat on the floor.

now i can't look at a stool in that position without thinking of rangoli. a man on a stool, the stool wobbles, the girl looks shocked, she had been staring at him and he at her, no words, just frisson and tremor of what who knows, then he loses his balance and falls... on top of her almost, rolls with her and they lie on a bed of colour. powder in red, purple, green, yellow flies creating a haze. a feeling envelops all.

i was gawking shamelessly as asr and wondering again how barun can manage to look this god in that state, when he started the game of provoking rocky. seemed like managing to send that note to khushi had done wonders for his mood and determination to get out.

"bas teen hi ho... baki log ko bula lo!"
just three of you... call the others. he said without even bothering to look at the henchmen.

"lekin kya faida hoga... main toh bhagne wala hoon."
but what's the point... i am going to run away.

he was sleek and crisp and in character. was he entertaining himself too while setting up some discomfort in his captors?
whe rocky pointed the revolver at his head, asr was sure, "tujhse nahin hoga... arnav singh raizada aaj yahan se bhagne wala hai. aur tum mein se koi bhi... mujhe rok nahin paayega. hut na..."

ah, you can't do it, he dismissed rocky with a cool stare. asr is going to escape today, he repeated... and none of you will be able to stop me. move, buddy.

oh that "hut na..." thrilling and earthy.

teddy bear henchman is scared, what shall we do if he does run away!

284 was really about this scene and that mami and anjali sequence.

nk said to a fretting khushi, "hum zaroor sitaphal honge..." we shall certainly get custard apple. he meant success as in safal, but sitaphal i am sure was not a randomly chosen word. sita was clearly being brought in, a mythological, larger than life dimension being added.

then khushi said words that made reminded me of the word patni, wife.

"arnav ji ko bachane ke liye hum kuch bhi kar sakte hain, kuch bhi..."

to save arnav ji i can do anything, anything.

isn't there a wife in that desperate commitment toward a man. anything... anything to save him. khushi has a thing about going out of her way, doing things that may even harm her for her loved ones... something about her will to save her arnav ji no matter what indicated he has become part of her life, her mate really. for who else would she tolerate shyam's slimy touch and lascivious talk?

mami ji finally reached anjali.. she who was lost in her temple visit, dedicating yet another pooja for the well being of her marriage. a wife there again. one who saw herself primarily as patni, her sustenance, her strength drawn from this relationship. she believed she was loved and that belief was so very essential to her life itself.

mami ji clarified, "matbal oo tumka dibhorce dede..." means he should divorce you.

disbelief rose in the air

shyam signed.

in 285, laad governor came home. on a ragged scrawl across a crumpled paper. and his wife hugged him tight, close to her chest.

nani ji was surprised khushi hadn't opened her gift. shyam was sick in his desire to see her reaction to the saree. had he chosen it? okay, i don't need to know.

he said it was like her teej saree. it wasn't. but again, just a word and a whole lot of memories rushed back. no need for flashback. at teej asr had opened her fast, as a husband is supposed to... so many strains of pati and patni in these episodes. a husband and wife who were true to each other despite marital chaos. and another whose entire happy lovely relationship was a mere lie.

"khushi ji, kal aap thoda free rahiyega humne aapke liye kuch plan kar rakha hai..." khushi ji, keep yourself free tomorrow, i have plans, said shyam. i wondered what it might be... of course, it was his sweet plan to kill asr. but what of asr's plan... he's going to escape... today.

anjali refused to believe a word mami ji said. even if she remembered seeing khushi with her aap bhi na several times. she decided, her inhone couldn't have said he would divorce her.

it was all a misunderstanding... galat faimi.

lovely texture in writing. yes it was a misunderstanding, yet not of the sort she thought.

she fought valiantly to keep her illusion intact. a wife who finally decided she would hear and see what she wanted to, not what was possibly true. i liked daljeet and utkarsha naik's interpretation and the treatment of this crucial scene... a sense of drama in it, and layers. this scene is the precursor of what it to come soon... a girl whose whole life is based on a galat faimi will choose to stay with that illusion.

khushi confided to her friend, her sakha nand kishore that she calls her "unhe" laad governor. this girl believed he was her husband. later writers thought she could say her marriage was just a sauda. but as i see her here, i know she never thought he was anything other than her husband. even though he had done what he had that night and suspected her the way he had, treated her so wrongly... yet he was her laad governor, her unhe, her pati.

two wives, both in love... terribly... with their pati... both in red, not by chance i am sure, when one swears before dm she'll do anything for her arnav ji and the other also before god dreams of her man and refuses to believe he doesn't love her and will leave her... take us down the trail of two love stories. stories completely dissimilar yet both really about that mysterious ajeeb thing... love.

just a short scene of asr... did he just kill teddy bear's best friend? he sure finished me off.
