a deal and its maker

everything will go the way arnav singh raizada wants it to go. when i met him first, he'd come to make a deal, and he'd made sure "sab kuch" had gone the way he'd planned it... there was a game in that deal too. one worked out ruthlessly by his dimaag.

after a long time a sense of that deal making, that game, and that rampant desire to win again... this time it's all coming from his dil, his dimaag is still as sharp and focused on the prize, but now there's a smile in it, albeit a devilish one.

why did this episode's asr remind me so much of the asr of 6 june? like he'd come back, only now having met love... love that was determined that its aim, its nishana, wouldn't miss. an almost defeated "shayad" asr walked out... was that what triggered in him a return to who he essentially was? unfamiliar surely that feeling of not being in command of a situation. even during kidnap, he had to be the one in charge, no matter that he was bound, gagged, being beaten. but here she almost had him beaten... what ailed her? why couldn't he reach her... yet the moment he realised what it was, it was as though asr receded and waiting in him surged right back.

thrilling to watch him ever since he shut that door behind him in his room, thought about things and then donned black to take on his girl... and no doubt it excited him to see her in red, the girl he'd felt funny things for when she'd worn that colour and he'd heard something in the air, felt something in his gut...

episode 133 alag achha dhamakedar

brothers and sisters, enemies and lovers. an episode that opened out and seemed to do a big group hug all around, a smart move i thought by writers to bring two antagonists to a place where they must stop fighting and collaborate. and so it was that asr and khushi got seriously involved in sealing the fate of payal and akash's love story.

the two may hate each others faraq not padta ways, they may hurt each other, okay, he manages to hurt her more most times... but when it comes to their siblings, they are putty and completely like each other. they will both do pretty much anything for their family. some day he will use this knowledge to force her to go to a temple, but for now, he can't bear to see his coz, his brother, sweet lost akash so forlorn and she has understood that her sister actually loves akash ji, just that she is stubborn and must be persuaded to change her mind.

to solve this imbroglio, the gussa and the sanka are out on their first date. i am totally delighted, i don't care what the reason is why they sit across the table from each other, they are out together, makes me happy. kkg is looking totally cute and lovely today. never more kkg. and asr, uff in that brown three piece and all his asr-ness about him... supremely amused and superior, a bit giddy too i think.

of course, he repeats this "deal" will be good for akash, has kkg immediately cutting in "deal? deal matlab?" quite uncharacteristically i thought, he looks about a bit then says okay, "this" will be good for akash. of course, he is a good boy, because he is asr's brother. in that tom and jerry back and forth that is quite their way, kkg almost falls into the teapot as she says, yeah, despite that he's nice.

an eyebrow ascends. dealmaker hasn't missed it. must have sharp hearing i guess to be good at making deals.

"usske bawajood bhi jiji ne na kaha..." despite that jiji said no, aww poor sanka devi is trying to be nice to her favourite most hated laad governor. he is not taken in.

he devices a simple plan to make payal change her mind. get akash to flood her with many gifts and...
he thinks that is what girls like... poor chap. i have to say, a part of me feels bad for this slightly dry young man who has never really understood girls or romance or anything like that. he has never gone that route and so the obvious things are what strike him.

kkg is horrified. what... never. not going to work. one must think, "kuch achha... dhamakedar... alag!"

priceless expression on self confessed unromantic man's face.

"humare paas ek plan hai!" i have a plan, beams she. the most "yeah, really!" look on his face and a matter of fact, "bolo." say.

she actually waves to him to come closer. lovely feel for khushi's character. when she is engrossed in something that she believes is important and all her energies are engaged, she forgets to keep barriers and be stiff, even with lg... i loved the way she beckons him.

so she must whisper this whole thing to him in the middle of a restaurant where no one knows them? completely ripping off an old ad slogan, all i can say is:"only kkg". maybe even, only sanaya.

while writing was smart and took the story forward effortlessly, there were many things that happened, that kkg or even at times asr did, which were really not that sharp and a bit silly too. i feel sanaya got khushi so so well, she could do the oddest even pretty duh stuff and still keep building khushi, making her come alive, everything added to that sunny jhalli sanka clean lovable and pretty sexy personality. there was a disarming openness in sanaya's acting that was hard not to fall for.

not even the slightest self consciousness marred the portrayal... made khushi really unbelievably cute and dishy, despite all her weird ways and clothes, even her sanctimonious preachy bits.

"aaiye toh sahi!" she insists when he just looks around a bit frazzled.

"wait!" says tycoon loudly. killingly. that accent, sigh.

and then he actually leans across to hear her.

much gesticulating, he looks totally unconvinced.

"hamare beech jo kuch bhi hua hai... ya... ho..." whatever has happened between us... that... ahem... as they leave the restaurant, a truce is called for the sake of siblings. hands are shaken... but...

"par khushi ek problem hai, tumhara plan bahut stoopid hai.."

"kya!!"

"fail ho jayga!"

he's sure her stoopid plan will fail. but then he is a man whose mind operates more rationally, western in attitude. he would possibly do a feasibility study, and apply other validated means of examining a situation before devising a plan based on research, calculation and much deliberation.

whereas madam is a master of the instinct. what's beyond the strictly rational. she knows her sister is stubborn, but she also knows her sis is in love and her key consumer insight comes from watching many films most likely... people in love behave irrationally. she is a hundred percent sure her plan will work. because it will tug where it needs to tug.

later he will tell her the plan had several loopholes... it did. yes, really, what was he doing bringing letters to payal if he knew his brother was out there about to kill himself. and yet, khushi is right... doesn't matter, plan is good. it worked. the proof of the pudding.

i thought, this is true in life too. we tend to over cogitate, over rationalise. sometimes you need a khushi strategy... kuch alag, dhamakedar, that comes straight from your gut and you just go for it.

a poignant scene as he drops her off. a look in his eyes, a strange hesitation. takes off his shades... ruminative music, as if something is on his mind.

the little eye movements of asr...

he's trying to say something. was it sorry for his behaviour on diwali as i thought earlier? or was it an apology for that terrifying meeting in sheesh mahal? he has just realised, what khushi said that evening was true.

"khushi, mujhe tumse..." he takes a decision and turns around to talk to her, alas...

she is nowhere in sight. she is of course, sitting all alert and in high dramatic mode on the floor of the suv. normal. this is khushi after all.

"tum wahan kya kar rahi ho?" what are you doing there? a totally wacky and cute sanaya. seems jiji is out there and so she must elude detection. again i wonder... why? what would happen if jiji saw her with arnav ji...

he actually leans back to see how her crawling off is going... khushi does take you to her crazy land with you. you forget to say this is dopey, even if you do, you go anyway. sanaya knew this bit of kkg like no one else could. we keep talking about the cleverness and smartness of script, but i abs believe, you needed these two actors to make this whole thing so totally unforgettable. even to pull it off.

the hair brained plan involves the horoscope of course. so payal is a libran. yeah, she feels like one. does anyone know kkg's bday? she feels like a scorpio to me teehee. there's also suicide... we met this devil first in the funny post janmashtami scene in the guise of a scene from sholay, now it's here as the filmi ruse to get payal to agree... but in its third appearance suicide will be really damaging. i wonder who was into this self killing idea among the writers, seemed sort of irresponsible after a point. especially that third time. here, though, it didn't offend, it hinted more at the nature of the planner than anything else.

in his den, the leo is trying to assert his superior might.

no need to call the "client" four times as advised by that khushi, three is enough. why, asks hapless fuzzy akash. because you must do things with apne style, apni sharton, your own style, on your own conditions, client must not think you're desperate.

really, we must all remember, the other party is always "client", even if she is your lover or wife or light of your life.

he fails to sway his smitten brother, who decides he will do exactly as kkg says. again, kkg shows a feel for pitch... how far a thing must be taken to have the impact one desires. maybe she should start teaching marketing and advertising...

a look from bhai. and like most of his looks, one can't put a price on it.

fourth call has a very angry payal...  and khushi in throes of major happiness.

she loves natak. this is essential khushi, i think she's born this way, the drama gene inherent in her. even with la, it's constantly weird overly dramatic means that she must devise for her to win over asr. the character comes with its resident over the topness...

the scene at the verandah... i guffawed at the thought of poor lord of all he surveys asr having to do things the way madam has decreed. so he stands there with a letter yelling at payal as per script provided by khushi. but when the smart, rather rationally oriented payal points out the gap in the whole scene. what are you doing standing here if your cousin is about to commit suicide?

the completely flummoxed laad governor.

the opposite of ott is he. no drama in him. not a jot. so now what... the deal maker is stumped.

and the cutest, angry, "kya boloon ab!" what should i say now. exasperated man. can't take all this any more.

in her elements though is his partner in mission and she saves the day.

"mananiya arnav singh raizada ji.. yeh kya hai?" respected arnav singh raizada sir... what's this! sanaya does a brill job of reading the suicide note, which for some unknown reason has words in hindi printed on the flip side, the beginning of a letter to the honourable mr raizada. let's not discuss how it got there. writer was in kkg frame of mind no doubt... damn the loopholes, on with the plan.

"itne loopholes hain... tumhari jiji sahi kah rahi thi..." there are so many loopholes, your sister was right.

"shhh! jiji aa gayi na, matlab plan achha tha." shh, sis is here, means plan was good.

it was delightful to see the two who had fallen out so badly after diwali and who were both hurting at what had happened, on the same side and at complete ease with each other, vibing. every time something happened the way she had predicted it would, or there was success, he looked at her... then she at him... smiles, wonder, even liking perhaps in each others gazes.

and when payal cried out, they ran together to be by her side. somehow this one scene really touched me.

khushi was anyway in that ecstatic mood over her sister and akash's love, because she believed in this emotion... so much.

not he. yet, the look on his face when with a "samhal ke, payal ji" his bro comes back... hmmm, again, no price tag.

when the mention of family comes up, the brave, strong brother steps in, "main baat karonga..." i'll talk to them.

asr is pretty much head of family when it comes to the big decisions, but for him to be involved in the romantic pursuits of akash, beautiful... and that look of almost gratitude, trusting and happy, kkg bestows on the khadoos... you can sense a trust, a bharossa grow.

the two hugs between siblings added layers to asr and kkg too... such complete people, not just whimsically drawn characters, devised to create dhakdhak trp generating romance.

of course, the most telling and lovely scene, khushi jumping with glee and grabbing asr's hand. they'd shared smiles at payal's despair before, two slightly heartless but completely loving brother and sister. now khushi held his hand, without thinking. an instinct? she knows whose hand she wants to hold maybe? and there's enough comfort between them despite all the nastiness of the past few days. there seemed to be that sense of huq she has too... and he didn't draw his hand away, just let it be.. looking at her searchingly. maybe  searching within him too to understand what he was really feeling. tender, ephemeral, beautiful moments.

felt real to me. when people care for each other, they may hurt each other badly, even hate each other, but then that abates and somehow normalcy returns and sometimes with it a little unguarded moment of happiness shared.

four young people walked toward us, the sky big behind them. a simple effective shot. i always appreciated this about ipk... the creative team got the most out of whatever they had. and they rarely had fancy budgets or sets or locations. to me that's a sign of true creative ability, to find the dhamakedar, the alag, the achha, in the ordinary, in whatever one has.

as they walked, asr and khushi kept looking at each other... so much conversation in those silent gazes.

through payal and akash a love story continued and got thicker, more entrenched.

just a thought

seems initially there was no plan to write a payal akash romance, but then it came along... possibly as a good means of allowing the asr kkg relationship to progress. both deepali and akshay were great at being akash payal, a depth to their feelings added by payal's deep nature, her denser emotions that when expressed spoke volumes, balancing tat, the gentler, more expressed akash... this jodi deserved more attention i can't help but think.

episode 132 it's a deal

i agree with asr, this thing is a deal. love between two people. what is it, if not a deal that the heart makes with eyes closed and without heeding caution...? putting all its assets on the line, targeting unlimited, endless gains. if you crack this one right, makes this life... a life. not mere existence. so yes, asr, i understand absolutely what you mean when you say, i think this deal will be good. and much later when he calls her his life's biggest deal, i want to swoon at his tone of voice and the connotation. the ultimate deal maker thinks she is the one, the biggest hottest deal for him. me not complaining.

it was interesting to watch the two, asr and khushi, act protective toward their siblings, turning downright aggressive and obnoxious with each other. and of course, pushing payal and akash to one side, completely out of the date that poor akash had so desperately set up.

he said he didn't want his bro to be halwai. she said, huh, not keeping my sister under the control of laad governor.

so he discovered she called him laad governor. a spectacular expression was bestowed upon this effrontery by one so irritating and halwai-ish. did he imply being a confectioner is a bad thing? oh, the class conscious raizada, maybe he's just mad at all halwais because he can't gobble sweets. okay, i will not be easy on him about this... he is ughly uppity and unnecessarily derogatory about someone's parent and people of a whole profession.

and how rude was that, "tum dono behene din mein sapne dekhna band karo," stop having absurd dreams, you two sisters. really, brusque, nasty, arrogant... even your good looks right now are not cutting no ice, sir.

payal was fabulous... and gave akash a much needed reality check. yes, you are in love with me and imagine you can't live without me. but what do you know about me? do you know that my baraat went back and i was left at the mandap?

was it on purpose the writers made asr say such hateful things? so that when he realised the truth of the night in sheesh mahal, his reaction is even more of a contrast, making the viewer empathise more keenly? fact is, i know wonderful strong super exciting people who say terrible things at times. it hints at some not too nice notions in their heads, but more often it speaks of how rattled they are about something. and really, asr was completely taken aback to see his bro-like coz with payal... the sis of the girl he is struggling desperately not to let matter. he sort of lost it and his worst side came to the fore.

khushi was no less aggressive and rude. again, because her sis being in a relationship with anyone related to this man, the man she can't hate however mean he may be, bothered her no end.

"aap nahin jaante... lekin yeh... yeh toh sab jaante hain na..." payal was distraught, the pressure of wanting someone but knowing it can't be. she tells him, you didn't know about that night, but he... he knows everything, meaning asr, of course. i am talking about that day when you...

"jiji!" with one quiet but insistent call, khushi stopped her sister from going there. too painful.. for everyone. a beautifully intense and timeless moment set in a scene marked by lightness, youth, the here and now.

as the girls leave, she turns back for an instant, he looks at her... just a little contact where a whole memory sits, pearls scattering. he looks nonplussed, so unlike him. a minute ago he was yelling and calling her names. ah, so human, these two.

then in a drenched voice, "chalo, jiji..." and the girls leave.

it isn't easy being a girl in this world. the thought came over me as i watched the two young women. when you are naturally the second gender, the one at the receiving end, whose aims, ambitions all become secondary to the men in your lives, it's a tough world. a man can walk out on a woman at the mandap, that too for dowry... it doesn't taint him, it taints her. where's the justice in this. yet that is what happens.

he offers to manage the meeting... a feeling for his brother. sweet.

and as he gets out of the car, a look on his face heralding a difficult memory (the look is so perfect, i didn't edit it, just let the cap be). she's falling, running, "please hume ghar jaane dijiye..." i need to go home, otherwise my sister's marriage will break. "toh toot jane do shadi..." then let it break, his cruel answer, not believing a word she said. suspicious of her, certain she'd come there with an ulterior motive. his long held wariness about women surfacing in the worst possible way.. what a night. and what he did to a girl, her family...

pearls scattered.

"maine usski baat kyun nahin suni, woh sach kah rahi thi, meri wajah se unki behen ki shadi..." why didn't i listen to her, she was speaking the truth, because of me her sister's wedding... he slams the car.

a beautifully frenetic payal.. we're not talking about what happened... leave me alone for a while. khushi is perplexed. even talking to dm isn't helping. then the dupatta takes over. akash's gift falls on jiji, and she can't help but hold it and weep, speaking of her helplessness... "humare haan kahne se kya hoga akashji humare naseeb mein aapka pyaar nahin... hume maaf kijiye... hum baar baar aapka dil todne ke liye majboor hain,"

what's the good of my saying, yes. your love is not in my fate... forgive me... i have to deny you time and time again.

khushi watches this whole thing and at last she understands. i guess when she first saw payal and akash, the zing of laad governor was on her, and she didn't make the obvious connection. but now she knows she has to set things right... and the way to do it is to talk to that arrogant...

in a touching scene, asr realises how smitten his coz is. he doesn't like to watch his family suffer... bit of a don, our asr... he must solve the problems his fam faces. and don't mess with his family, if you know what's good for you..

"akash?" just one word... a world of love and concern, the slightest grain and hoarseness in the voice.

"payal ji ne dobara mana kar diya..." payal ji said "no" again, akash is sad, forlorn, lifeless. he says a key thing about love... there is no "wajah"  no reason for loving... you just love.

then a difficult question, "jiss din usski shadi tooti... kya hua tha uss din..." the day her marriage broke, what happened. asr won't answe that question but he did ask...

"i'll ask you just once... are you sure of your feelings... dekho yeh pyaar wyaar mujhe samajh nahi ata.." see all this love and things, i don't understand. no he doesn't, because he has decided there's no place for it in his life. if anything, it's an impediment... a thing that leads to terrible things. but again, in his typical liberal way, he's not stopping anyone else from feeling it or wanting it.

in fact, once he's convinced that it is what akash is very sure of and after marrying payal will not regret it, he says with alacrity, "ok then it's done, agar yeh tumhare liye itna important hai... toh main yeh deal final karwake rahoonga," if this is so important to you then i'll make sure the deal is closed.

"lekin, bhai... wo..." but, bhai... akash is floundering. really, akash, there's a limit to being clueless i feel like yelling.

"bas, bol diya na!" now i've said it, that's it.

"bol toh diya lekin... kaunsi deal?" you said it, but what deal, wonders the lost lover.

chalo bhai ke bhavan bhavan bhavan...

i need to give an award to the creative who chose khushi's ring tone. it is maddening, irritating, dancey, feels gota covered, unforgettable. what a perfect answer to the brief the director must have given.

his call to her leads nowhere, as she is still unaware of jiji's true feelings. but then they both try to call each other at the same time.

he's completely frazzled at not getting through...

"zaroor apne fiance se baat kar rahi hogi," she must be talking to her fiance, he sounds practically jealous. and so what if she is, mister.

"kisse baat kar rahi thi tum..." who were you talking to... the moment she picks up the phone. so cute.

these interactions, the irritated, aware of each other repartee and conversations and fights between the two, these are classic ipk. and their unwittingly overstepping boundaries, always a little further in than their relationship allows them to be, such a fantastic way to portray attraction... a powerful attraction really that doesn't allow you to remain cool in the other's presence... you are always slightly aflame when the other one is there. and you say things you wouldn't to others.

and so it is that they go out on their first hot date. they must meet to bring their siblings together. and for the sake of that love, their own private nafrat must be suspended for a while. whatever the excuse, asr and khushi are in a restaurant, just the two of them together.

and in all the fun and games that followed again i saw asr fall madly for khushi kumari gupta one more time. bitten badly by the love bug.

of course, the cue to craziness came from the chair chase... "aree hum yahan baithne wale hain..." arre, i am about to sit here, yelled she when he again pulled out the chair she went to. "i know tabhi chair pull kar raha hoon..." i know, that's why i am pulling the chair out, replied the suave one as small town girl showed her ignorance, but ever so cutely.

when she cut in "don't put sugar!" in his coffee, she was told that it would be served separately... but he couldn't stop himself from being touched by her concern, nor she hide her awkwardness at blurting it out... always an overstepping of boundaries... that attraction. such tenderness in these moments.

and when she sort of admitted, "aap sahi the..." you were right...

he couldn't let the moment pass. all of asr in his self satisfied know all air, "main kabhi galat nahi hota..." i am never wrong.

how can a man look so smug and so hot at once. brilliant acting... just plain brilliant. so many ways to deliver that line... how did he choose the right one and the perfect expression to match. urbane, polished, intelligent, just the right amount of arrogance, and a bit of humour... a little bit of a flirt there? just a wee bit, maybe?

"chalo kum se kum ek biskut phree toh mil gaya." oh good, at least got a free biscuit, she said, after fretting over having to fix one's own tea and paying so much.
and somewhere between her biting the pack to tear it open and his eyes moving, his lips turning up at this jhalliness, i believe he fell again in love with her... these were the things that made keema of all his koshish. no amount of trying to get over such a girl was gonna work.

i had felt his heart go thud when he found her in his wardrobe, one eye shut, then when she admitted she couldn't find orange juice and so poured mango juice into his shoe, at odd bizarre utterly and only khushi sanka moments i think he really fell in love. of course, her kindness, her innocence, her love of fam, her courage, her beauty, all of what was khushi he loved, but it was at these moments that i think his heart did crazy things.

when asr really met khushi. no baggage, no misconceptions, no barriers. just him and her. two people... meant to meet. a man and a woman. a boy and a girl...

perhaps he felt his heart flip, and wanted to move away quickly, so with an amused, adult air, taking back control, he said, "khushi, agar tumhari chai aur biskutt ki important conversation khatam ho gayi ho toh akash aur payal ke baare mein baat kar sakte hain?"

khushi, if your important conversation about tea and biscuit is over shall we talk of akash and payal?

and they spoke of the deal they would help clinch... while the biggest deal of his life got going.

episode 340 shut up and sorry

practically nothing felt right about the episode. apart from maybe asr's first "shut up" to khushi.

a lot of things happened. these days episodes are really packed with stuff but everything feels a little forced. even the cute exchanges between asr and khushi. today i think i laughed only when manorama came charging up with coconuts to fix her fave nephew's mood.

that playing and making silly jokes at wedding time feels so familiar, even if slightly nauseating but well, our weddings aren't quite complete without it.

the rap between utkarsha naik and barun sobti is pretty neat too. he has that slightly shocked air around his gold infested relative and she is only indulgent and loving toward her super successful neph. and though of course you can't convince asr that he has to break a coconut on khushi's head for something or the other, their vibe was so funny, i did giggle.

"bachelorwa hello hi aur marriagewa bye bye!" and soon after that "rich one" for ritual and that irritated incredulous "rich one?!!" from asr. rather nice.

"ye sab kya ho raha hai..." what's all this. his voice gets me as he addresses everyone, "maine kab kaha ki main shadi tod raha hoon..." when did i say i am calling off the wedding. he sounded great and looked fabulous, but the whole thing was too cutesy and why the clear shot of a man with a bald patch from the back? couldn't the director tell that was not asr?

alas, everything else was to use a high falutin' word... meh.

even asr looking gorgeous at the poolside staring at his bride to be. of course the evil sorcerer had move the pool again.

right at the end, that pushing of kkg against the door... that "of course!" yeah she is the biggest deal of his life... i felt a riff of excitement. here is a man, a hot blooded, adult clever funny man with a violent temper and a terrible need to be loved. a man who loves magnificently and without caution. who is already married to this woman... his wife, whom he wants home. in his life, in his bed, by his side every night.

and all around this goofy, bubble gummy natak. what's going on? he said sorry, i knew he would. again it seemed to come right out and hit me. galat. this was not sahi.

but that push against the door. yes, that was asr. i am glad camera and director wanted him to be just him for a bit.

damn the trp.

i said nothing about khushi because one episode at a time they took khushi away from herself. today, i didn't almost recognise her. a slightly hard and brassy so called khushiness. except for that one place at the end where she charged him with her return volley... she too was upset, how could he do that to her. for a few seconds a normal woman... khushi.

episode 62 the deal maker

in the strangest of way, they were alike.

when anjali left that afternoon, khushi was absolutely shaken. an impossible ultimatum loomed: either work for us at rm and train lavanya, or pay the money you owe ar. rupees one lakh.

nowadays in india i constantly hear about lakhs and lakhs of rupees as though this has become an easy sum to all, our "scams" feel embarrassed to be worth anything less than at the very least a couple of thousand crores. a lakh being equal to 100,000 or a hundred thousand, and a crore, one hundred times that, 10 million to be precise.

but the truth of the matter is, india is still full of families like khushi's where a lakh means much, sometimes means impossible. almost. so when a man you barely know but feel well disposed toward says, let me get it for you, takes a lot to say "no." your aunt is teary eyed with relief and urges you to grab the offer, for "ek taraf kuan hai, doosri taraf sakshat nandkissore." it's a deep well on one side and the lord himself on the other, according to buaji. somehow shyam even with his sweetest face on is the last one to evoke the thought of the eternal. but buaji was blinded by love. all she could see was a bridegroom for her little titaliya, nothing else. old eyes do get tricked sometimes, and what are these compared to nani's? even they couldn't spot the truth of this dark one. shyam, minus all connotations, just means black. nothing else.

"bada hi dhokebaaz hai yeh payr... baar baar ladkhada jaati hai." quite a scammer is this leg... keeps going off, becoming unsteady, says shyam as he feels a shooting pain and stumbles, and khushi rushes to help him and holds his shoulder. a very awkward moment, a sense of red heat around my ears at his lascivious enjoyment of her concern, her touch. eyes all soft and melting. not a shred of conscience does this man have, amoral in his being, all he cares about is what's in it for me. in certain parts of this world he'd be a great success. and in the way of a good scam his will be worth many people's happiness, their very sense of feeling whole and good. a real shyam scale scam. darkness in its core and every layer.

but today, the character that intrigued me most was khushi herself. we keep talking about her and asr being completely different from each other in every way. he dark, material oriented, believing money is power, atheist, arrogant, hard, unyielding. she light, emotionally intelligent, believing only in the hand of devi maiya, never money, charming, polite, malleable, gentle. even the show makers speak of opposites attracting, etc.

however, for some time now, i've felt, yes, they had a lot that was different, but perhaps what called out from within them to each other was the instinctive recognition of what was essentially alike in them. two kids terribly hurt inside. both managing in their own way. but a quiet, hidden, hurting place within. oh khushi had hers too, despite her smile, in fact that smile was put there perhaps by that hurt. also the sunny nature, the creation of stars that are parents and more. they were really at a basic level voyagers of the same universe, they had seen and felt the same places, even if not together. they knew of a pain not many have known so they can't feel. their love of family and people they loved was born there and had the same kind of intensity. both had their insecurities and and both were in their own way akhdoo. khushi showed her worst side of it on his birthday and the best every time she held on for a good cause. he of course, behaved like he had a copyright on that trait.

and today i noticed something else about them that was exactly alike. not just asr...

khushi is a deal maker too.

in the true and real sense of the word. she doesn't back down when a problem comes, she negotiates. the basic instinct of a dealmaker.

it was there in that very first scene of hers. a huge issue at hand, payal's in laws have asked for lots of extra dowry at the last minute, her father is going to mortgage the shop. there is no 18 year old girl i've come across, certainly not from a middle class, small town family who will devise a plan to tackle this, nick the deed of the shop, and set off on her scooter in wedding party finery, helmet and sneakers on, to talk it over with her to be bro-in-law. try and save the shop and her sister's future. that is not what sweet 18 year old girls do on the day of their elder sis's wedding, they busy themselves giggling, chatting, prettying themselves up. and however foolhardy it may seem, it says you don't want to be resigned to your fate, you want to talk, you want to make a deal. and you know that means, compromise, tempering expectations, stuff, but because you desire to see something done you are prepared to accept a few "adjustments."

just like asr, when life presented a lemon, she taught herself to make lemonade, sorry nimbu paani with lots of sugar for a sweet tongue and some chat masala for that extra zest.

"if you can fill the unforgiving minute
with sixty seconds worh of distance run"

two lines from one of my favourite poems, rudyard kipling's "if." had written this poem way back for asr, for he had much of what is in the poem. but this quality even khushi has. when things get tough, she doesn't sit and cry, or resign and run, or throw tantrums of "i quit." she panics, she fears, she rages, then she chats with dm. her poolside is this little image of a goddess always within arms reach, it seems to me. what poolside often gives asr, dm gives khushi: a sense of connection with their inner self. to her she goes, worried, upset, whatever and seeks a way. as she closes her eyes and joins her palms, she descends into calm, gets in tune with herself, and hears her innermost being more clearly. and the way "comes" to her. feels like dm speaks. unhampered by fear, tension, material things, true and keen communication flows from her deepest self to her.

and so, completely racked by tension and trouble, she hears the ultimatum of anjali, then the offer by shyam. and then, surprisingly, asr's voice, "tum jaise log toh paiso ke liye..." why does she hear him? why does what he thinks or says matter? why did the instinctive deal maker decide to walk away from it all in a hot and bothered moment in a sunday afternoon store room. why was she ready to run, not deal? yet, wasn't she really assessing the situation? how she looked at him after throwing that line. and then in the most convoluted manner ever, she found a way out of her own decision to leave delhi and now it's, i'm not leaving delhi.

so what he thinks matters. she is all set it seems to just say, no. then she hears her mother's voice, speaking of the terrible financial difficulties at home. and she comes to her poolside.

next morning, when the bell rings at rm, it is no surprise. the deal maker is here. the tears and anxiety gone from her face. instead a resolution.

and a shart. a clause. this deal is going to have some advantage for her too. not everything his way. or anybody's. she speaks of "majboori" but she never lets her majboori break her spirit. a deal with that too. in fact, with dm also she jests often, get this done for me and i'll give you tonnes of prasad you like. i know these may not seem like real deals, but they are... an ongoing negotiation with life to keep pushing it the way you want it to go, while it pushes you to do what it wants. i love this attitude of ipk. there's a realism and a positivity and an active feel to it.

i admire this quality of khushi's in people. perhaps because i have too little of it. took me quite a while to understand, if you want to win in life, you gotta be prepared to play a bit. the very closed "this or nothing" attitude can actually come in the way of living a full and real life.

"kitne laddoo the"... mami and la are doing a girls' thing, la getting several laddoos for her laddoo making. anjali quakes and worries whether khushi will come or not. she has taken a most uncharacteristic dealmaker's stance here as her love for chhotey is involved and she will do what it takes to keep him from leaving home. nai sees the mess la makes and says, "ek taraf ee hai... aur doosri tarf khoosi... jo galti ma kiya hua kaam bhi... theek karat hai." at one end there's this one, at the other thee's khsuhi who even when she does something by mistake, she gets it to be right.

and so when khushi enters, and anjali explains, that she's here to train la, as nani won't let her or mami get involved, anjali thinks she's sweetly tricked nani. nani of course smiles and readily agrees to the idea. why that gracious and almost irrepressible smile on nani's face though, i wonder. in episode 63, the reason becomes clear.

shatir nani, more or less engineered the return of khushi. uff. now we know where the grandson gets that stubborn and clever streak from. so i like an idiot thought nani is going to take this i'll move in my cool gf to the family home thing lying down. watch out all, this is nani. don't mess with the babbar sher. another supreme deal maker among us. i adore such pragmatic, empowered yet gracious and feminine portrayal of women in media. this is not sick manipulation but a considered game playing to bring home a point that she genuinely believes is good for chhotey. she gains nothing from it, just saves her loved one from losing something. this is really sexy. and subversive. the opposite of the "come, walk all over me" women patriarchal societies have successfully created as an ideal. jayshree t is just so perfect in her role. she brings alive another time, and a grace women had without being obsequious. compared to her la looks old fashioned and highly submissive before a man.

la, on hearing chamkili will teach her things, does the either or thing and says, she'll leave. nani is delighted, "hum janat rahe khushi ke kadam padte hi shubh kaam hoga," i knew the moment khushi stepped in good things would happen.
 anjali panicked.

then the resolute one took over. "anjali ji, hum sambhalenge." anjali ji, i'll manage this. and she does. classic manoeuvre, the win win "phormoola." there's something in it for you, la, and something for me. shall we

"chamkili se samjhauta dono ka fayda." compromising with the situation/chamkili will profit both of us. give... take... win. smart girl.

la says, "deal."

today, this terribly good looking man appeared for half a second and said quarter of a thing, though everyone told us how much he disliked her and kept him in the picture. ok, we ge the point. and really, like or not, please show up in the same frame as her and devastate us. that's all. there's fayda in it for all.

in the rest of the news...
mami: "tumra heart tumse bahut e baat karat hai. humra heart ekdam mouni baba hai."
your heart speaks a lot to you, mine is a silent hermit.
how to talk, mami, if you don't stop even for an instant?

mami: "ab aayi maja phati sari bherses chhote kapde matlab easht bherses bhest..." oh it's gonna be fun, torn saree vs small clothes, east versus west...

bua: "dilli ki saari sadake oo raijada ke gharai jaake khatam hoti hai?"
do all delhi roads end in raizada mansion?
maybe not, but khushi's steps make all roads go there.

kunti, sita. did anjali kind of look at khushi as she corrected mami and said, "sita" not kunti? is this a hint of a trial by fire, an agni pariksha being dropped? i prefer to think it's about the extraordinary strength of sita who took a lot, but finally said "enough." in bengali, her call to mother earth to take her back after she'd been doubted by ram the "n"th time, "dharani deedha hao," earth, cleave open!... still gives me goose bumps.

wrote two days ago when i reserved this spot, every word still true (and thanks to katelyn, now that i know what's on tonight, my heart is in complete dhak dhak state, acidity keen. main badtameez hoon poori duniya ke liye, lekin aap ke liye nahin or words to that effect, and how did he look exactly. tell you, the man was born to render my gender completely ineffectual and permanently acidity struck.)
