episode 62 the deal maker

in the strangest of way, they were alike.

when anjali left that afternoon, khushi was absolutely shaken. an impossible ultimatum loomed: either work for us at rm and train lavanya, or pay the money you owe ar. rupees one lakh.

nowadays in india i constantly hear about lakhs and lakhs of rupees as though this has become an easy sum to all, our "scams" feel embarrassed to be worth anything less than at the very least a couple of thousand crores. a lakh being equal to 100,000 or a hundred thousand, and a crore, one hundred times that, 10 million to be precise.

but the truth of the matter is, india is still full of families like khushi's where a lakh means much, sometimes means impossible. almost. so when a man you barely know but feel well disposed toward says, let me get it for you, takes a lot to say "no." your aunt is teary eyed with relief and urges you to grab the offer, for "ek taraf kuan hai, doosri taraf sakshat nandkissore." it's a deep well on one side and the lord himself on the other, according to buaji. somehow shyam even with his sweetest face on is the last one to evoke the thought of the eternal. but buaji was blinded by love. all she could see was a bridegroom for her little titaliya, nothing else. old eyes do get tricked sometimes, and what are these compared to nani's? even they couldn't spot the truth of this dark one. shyam, minus all connotations, just means black. nothing else.

"bada hi dhokebaaz hai yeh payr... baar baar ladkhada jaati hai." quite a scammer is this leg... keeps going off, becoming unsteady, says shyam as he feels a shooting pain and stumbles, and khushi rushes to help him and holds his shoulder. a very awkward moment, a sense of red heat around my ears at his lascivious enjoyment of her concern, her touch. eyes all soft and melting. not a shred of conscience does this man have, amoral in his being, all he cares about is what's in it for me. in certain parts of this world he'd be a great success. and in the way of a good scam his will be worth many people's happiness, their very sense of feeling whole and good. a real shyam scale scam. darkness in its core and every layer.

but today, the character that intrigued me most was khushi herself. we keep talking about her and asr being completely different from each other in every way. he dark, material oriented, believing money is power, atheist, arrogant, hard, unyielding. she light, emotionally intelligent, believing only in the hand of devi maiya, never money, charming, polite, malleable, gentle. even the show makers speak of opposites attracting, etc.

however, for some time now, i've felt, yes, they had a lot that was different, but perhaps what called out from within them to each other was the instinctive recognition of what was essentially alike in them. two kids terribly hurt inside. both managing in their own way. but a quiet, hidden, hurting place within. oh khushi had hers too, despite her smile, in fact that smile was put there perhaps by that hurt. also the sunny nature, the creation of stars that are parents and more. they were really at a basic level voyagers of the same universe, they had seen and felt the same places, even if not together. they knew of a pain not many have known so they can't feel. their love of family and people they loved was born there and had the same kind of intensity. both had their insecurities and and both were in their own way akhdoo. khushi showed her worst side of it on his birthday and the best every time she held on for a good cause. he of course, behaved like he had a copyright on that trait.

and today i noticed something else about them that was exactly alike. not just asr...

khushi is a deal maker too.

in the true and real sense of the word. she doesn't back down when a problem comes, she negotiates. the basic instinct of a dealmaker.

it was there in that very first scene of hers. a huge issue at hand, payal's in laws have asked for lots of extra dowry at the last minute, her father is going to mortgage the shop. there is no 18 year old girl i've come across, certainly not from a middle class, small town family who will devise a plan to tackle this, nick the deed of the shop, and set off on her scooter in wedding party finery, helmet and sneakers on, to talk it over with her to be bro-in-law. try and save the shop and her sister's future. that is not what sweet 18 year old girls do on the day of their elder sis's wedding, they busy themselves giggling, chatting, prettying themselves up. and however foolhardy it may seem, it says you don't want to be resigned to your fate, you want to talk, you want to make a deal. and you know that means, compromise, tempering expectations, stuff, but because you desire to see something done you are prepared to accept a few "adjustments."

just like asr, when life presented a lemon, she taught herself to make lemonade, sorry nimbu paani with lots of sugar for a sweet tongue and some chat masala for that extra zest.

"if you can fill the unforgiving minute
with sixty seconds worh of distance run"

two lines from one of my favourite poems, rudyard kipling's "if." had written this poem way back for asr, for he had much of what is in the poem. but this quality even khushi has. when things get tough, she doesn't sit and cry, or resign and run, or throw tantrums of "i quit." she panics, she fears, she rages, then she chats with dm. her poolside is this little image of a goddess always within arms reach, it seems to me. what poolside often gives asr, dm gives khushi: a sense of connection with their inner self. to her she goes, worried, upset, whatever and seeks a way. as she closes her eyes and joins her palms, she descends into calm, gets in tune with herself, and hears her innermost being more clearly. and the way "comes" to her. feels like dm speaks. unhampered by fear, tension, material things, true and keen communication flows from her deepest self to her.

and so, completely racked by tension and trouble, she hears the ultimatum of anjali, then the offer by shyam. and then, surprisingly, asr's voice, "tum jaise log toh paiso ke liye..." why does she hear him? why does what he thinks or says matter? why did the instinctive deal maker decide to walk away from it all in a hot and bothered moment in a sunday afternoon store room. why was she ready to run, not deal? yet, wasn't she really assessing the situation? how she looked at him after throwing that line. and then in the most convoluted manner ever, she found a way out of her own decision to leave delhi and now it's, i'm not leaving delhi.

so what he thinks matters. she is all set it seems to just say, no. then she hears her mother's voice, speaking of the terrible financial difficulties at home. and she comes to her poolside.

next morning, when the bell rings at rm, it is no surprise. the deal maker is here. the tears and anxiety gone from her face. instead a resolution.

and a shart. a clause. this deal is going to have some advantage for her too. not everything his way. or anybody's. she speaks of "majboori" but she never lets her majboori break her spirit. a deal with that too. in fact, with dm also she jests often, get this done for me and i'll give you tonnes of prasad you like. i know these may not seem like real deals, but they are... an ongoing negotiation with life to keep pushing it the way you want it to go, while it pushes you to do what it wants. i love this attitude of ipk. there's a realism and a positivity and an active feel to it.

i admire this quality of khushi's in people. perhaps because i have too little of it. took me quite a while to understand, if you want to win in life, you gotta be prepared to play a bit. the very closed "this or nothing" attitude can actually come in the way of living a full and real life.

"kitne laddoo the"... mami and la are doing a girls' thing, la getting several laddoos for her laddoo making. anjali quakes and worries whether khushi will come or not. she has taken a most uncharacteristic dealmaker's stance here as her love for chhotey is involved and she will do what it takes to keep him from leaving home. nai sees the mess la makes and says, "ek taraf ee hai... aur doosri tarf khoosi... jo galti ma kiya hua kaam bhi... theek karat hai." at one end there's this one, at the other thee's khsuhi who even when she does something by mistake, she gets it to be right.

and so when khushi enters, and anjali explains, that she's here to train la, as nani won't let her or mami get involved, anjali thinks she's sweetly tricked nani. nani of course smiles and readily agrees to the idea. why that gracious and almost irrepressible smile on nani's face though, i wonder. in episode 63, the reason becomes clear.

shatir nani, more or less engineered the return of khushi. uff. now we know where the grandson gets that stubborn and clever streak from. so i like an idiot thought nani is going to take this i'll move in my cool gf to the family home thing lying down. watch out all, this is nani. don't mess with the babbar sher. another supreme deal maker among us. i adore such pragmatic, empowered yet gracious and feminine portrayal of women in media. this is not sick manipulation but a considered game playing to bring home a point that she genuinely believes is good for chhotey. she gains nothing from it, just saves her loved one from losing something. this is really sexy. and subversive. the opposite of the "come, walk all over me" women patriarchal societies have successfully created as an ideal. jayshree t is just so perfect in her role. she brings alive another time, and a grace women had without being obsequious. compared to her la looks old fashioned and highly submissive before a man.

la, on hearing chamkili will teach her things, does the either or thing and says, she'll leave. nani is delighted, "hum janat rahe khushi ke kadam padte hi shubh kaam hoga," i knew the moment khushi stepped in good things would happen.
 anjali panicked.

then the resolute one took over. "anjali ji, hum sambhalenge." anjali ji, i'll manage this. and she does. classic manoeuvre, the win win "phormoola." there's something in it for you, la, and something for me. shall we

"chamkili se samjhauta dono ka fayda." compromising with the situation/chamkili will profit both of us. give... take... win. smart girl.

la says, "deal."

today, this terribly good looking man appeared for half a second and said quarter of a thing, though everyone told us how much he disliked her and kept him in the picture. ok, we ge the point. and really, like or not, please show up in the same frame as her and devastate us. that's all. there's fayda in it for all.

in the rest of the news...
mami: "tumra heart tumse bahut e baat karat hai. humra heart ekdam mouni baba hai."
your heart speaks a lot to you, mine is a silent hermit.
how to talk, mami, if you don't stop even for an instant?

mami: "ab aayi maja phati sari bherses chhote kapde matlab easht bherses bhest..." oh it's gonna be fun, torn saree vs small clothes, east versus west...

bua: "dilli ki saari sadake oo raijada ke gharai jaake khatam hoti hai?"
do all delhi roads end in raizada mansion?
maybe not, but khushi's steps make all roads go there.

kunti, sita. did anjali kind of look at khushi as she corrected mami and said, "sita" not kunti? is this a hint of a trial by fire, an agni pariksha being dropped? i prefer to think it's about the extraordinary strength of sita who took a lot, but finally said "enough." in bengali, her call to mother earth to take her back after she'd been doubted by ram the "n"th time, "dharani deedha hao," earth, cleave open!... still gives me goose bumps.

wrote two days ago when i reserved this spot, every word still true (and thanks to katelyn, now that i know what's on tonight, my heart is in complete dhak dhak state, acidity keen. main badtameez hoon poori duniya ke liye, lekin aap ke liye nahin or words to that effect, and how did he look exactly. tell you, the man was born to render my gender completely ineffectual and permanently acidity struck.)

about anjali and writing losing its way

hi all,

was reading the chat above.

anjali was actually a character that intrigued me, and i think daljeet's acting got me past the itch to slap her whenever she did that sweet loving "nyaka" sis thing... daljeet was really good. she took anjali through her several traits with grace and ease. the besotted blind in love wife (he was staying away nights for so long, she never suspected a thing, even canny mami commented). the completely dependent and loving sister. the pampered granddaughter... and yet with a steely determination in her... i remember a day when mami was freaking out over akash carrying payal and anjali walked in and managed the scene. in fact she was a bit stern with mami. anjali often managed things.

she would manage, lovingly manipulate, her brother so well too... she always knew she had power over him.

and yes a part of her was terribly shaken and fear ridden ever since that night in their lives... she constantly was into her poojas i felt to get a hold of that shaken part of hers... that's why the pooja path mattered to an excessive degree, even nani couldn't take it.

she was meticulous about things... that whole thing about how to set the table, how to cut salad, etc., she was a girl born well who showed signs of her background and upbringing in many many ways. she was an intelligent girl who spoke in crisp english and thankfully that did not make her a bad girl Embarrassed.

when she started sneaking out to see shyam, i actually was quite happy... complexity... i kept thinking we'd see complexity here... i also was sure that it would be she who would in the end bring shyam to his denouement. maybe with a little help from khushi, since shyam had so wronged khushi too, but she would be pivotal... i am silly, i thought writers were writing.

yes, anjali was a pivotal character... her relationship with asr is key i feel... but she was just messed up and left there.

asr had not only stopped when payal had mentioned shyam the night he brough khsuhi back, he knew khushi's fiance's name was shyam... in the absolutely stunning 125, right at the end she answered her phone in front of him and said, "ji, shyam ji..." so what happened to the sharp shatir one later... no recall? not even once?

the whole fam knew her fiance's name was shyam... yet it occurred to no one...

so many hints were dropped, and scenes about anjali finding shyam and khushi together... never to be acted on later.

babu ji remained where he was though there were scenes where we heard he was getting better. so what was the big hoohaa about him seeing shyam and knowing the truth? just for hospital hug?

and shyam... that subtle interesting pleasant looking man with a funny desire and a lack of conscience, almost scary in its intensity and curiously out of place with the rest of him, that we started with... what happened to him? he became boss and started rocking... then he said he is bura... that's all. so why was he in lucknow on that day he first met khushi... even then he was hiding his whereabouts from his wife...

i am frazzled beyond words after writing about the last few episodes. i am completely shocked at the lack of any respect for one's own work that many showed here. and really, was it necessary. i sense a lot of discord among makers when i see or write... leaves me untethered...

ultimately all the beautiful characters were wrecked... even asr was drastically toned down... his actor tried valiantly to keep him asr, despite long hair and oily skin... only nani ji, i think she remained more or less who i knew her to be. i would have liked to have seen her stern side a bit somewhere having seen that in the beginning and liking that element.

ipk was the kind of story which was really about its people and not so much about what happened out there... and they had indeed created some very special characters, each one... i mean even the prakash brothers have a place in our chats... if they had only felt there characters in their hearts and been guided by them, i have a feeling they would have not gone so haywire.

i understand the trp worries.

ipk was doing very well outside india but slipping in the domestic numbers. my thought on this: must every show be only for domestic market trp? in that case why this foray to get overseas audiences at all? and having got such a winner, wasn't it a bit silly to just let it go because 8pm slot needed more trp? would it not have been better to shift it to another time slot but try and stay with the tale which was getting humongous attention abroad, and i know of many many people who loved it in india too? anyway i am not a television executive... i would not know.

but i do write.

and i know there was no need to lose the whole thing so badly.

no, khushi does not like crackers... who wrote the diwali i will never forget and who wrote the diwali i can barely remember other than that faux pas.

sorry to go on. i am completely frazzled these days...

thank g i never was a tv serial watcher and am making sure this never happens again. though if a certain actor... teehee.

episode 120 charade

love, we have often heard is blind. but now it is also dumb. seems, for a change, the deal newly made of not talking to each other will be kept, and the results of that will have us reaching for new words to express hilarious, uproarious, downiright funny, impossibly funny, etc.

directors have decided to go light a couple of episodes, because something big is on its way. a little laughter and not too much thought is what we are to take away from these, i felt. let our guard down, be in a calm state of mind.

ved raj has said earlier that they had no idea humour would work between asr and khushi. but when they realised that barun and sanaya pulled off a mean funny act, it became a natural part of their language, adding range and spectrum to their attraction. i am happy it was never over used, just a bit of it when needed, and delivered oh so perfectly.

they wouldn't talk to each other, but they couldn't bring themselves not to say things to with each other. meaningful exchange is possible without the spoken word. they have long just looked at each pother to say a million things, but now it was time to use other parts of the body and go full force into dumb charade. one word... two parts... first part.

khushi is trying to tell asr that the time for his meeting has changed, it's brought forward to 12 noon. some of ipk's most rofling moments later, asr hasn't a clue of what khushi's trying to say. she first jumps into his path, stops him, makes faces, he starts "what the-" then remembering the condition of no talk, shuts up and watches her antics. sanaya is flawless in her wild weirdness, how to convey meeting is at 12 without saying it. if anyone is looking for a team mate for charades, may we suggest khushi kumari gupta. barun's expressions as she watches his jhalli babe in action are of course priceless... (they could have used this bit for a neat mastercard priceless commercial). but the best part is there is always an undercurrent of that thing between them. it's just there below the surface, all the time. even when it is all light and funny.

la was a super la right through, silly about certain things, sweet about others, and impossibly duh about the safed jhoot aka jootey, white lie aka shoe. when she said, but your shoes are black to anjali, i thought she'd finally get a whack from her sis in law to be. lovely acting by all, and notice how anjali can merrily tell a lie when she means to have her way. poor mami, just not being able to crack the code the three women have set. the daal is bothering her... what's in it. after seeing the entry of khushi and the subsequent exit of all players from the stage aka living room, the astute mano darling delivers one of her super dialogwas.

"hum toh good girl ke jaisan daal ke baare mein sochat hai, lekin yahan toh poora ka poora menu card ba hi change hui gawa... jhoote ke jootey ban gaye, gabbar thakurke best phrend phorebher ban gaye... humka toh doubt howat hai... hello hi bye bye."
like a good girl i'd thought about the daal, here the whole menu has been changed... lie has become shoe, gabbar has become thakur's best friend forever, i have a doubt, hello hi bye bye.

she needn't doubt, it's a certainty that some game is afoot. and what's more, clever creatives are having fun building up the daal story too. it will of course be served up soon.

speaking of games, one cracking sharp and one downright creepy in this episode.

creepy first. ugh, shyam slimed up to his wife fearing discovery. when she pulled out the jeweler's receipt and almost caught him out, he snatched it from her hand, told a lie, pretty black one, and saved his scaly skin. seeing her gullibility then he really wanted to be certain that she would remain best fool forever and played his deadliest number. you are not hiding anything from me, are you? she asked, first you never told me about polishing the ring, now you say i needn't pick it up... he said yes, he's getting married again.

she looked at him and didn't believe him, and as he wanted collapsed into his arms.

he pushed it a bit more... see when i tell you the truth you don't believe. she went all serious and even more trusting of him.

wish abhaas hadn't bothered with that slimy smile. the impact might have been more chilling. this woman is entirely in his control, he can do what he pleases, she will not doubt him. funny thing is, again and again, her sixth sense warned her and she seemed to notice things, like just now, or the other day at the mandir when shashi ji was looking at them, but every time, her weakness for this man, the notion of that much cherished love that she really wanted in her life, and feared for "n" number of reasons she might not have, that weakness never let her heed the knowing sixth sense, never let her see the truth.

if her brother was broken inside, unable to trust love, she was damaged her own way since that night, desperate for that very fairy tale love which her father's actions had taken away... something that would perhaps make her feel whole again, erase the sense of betrayal and coming apart that  night had brought. otherwise, an intelligent bright woman like her, with a mind of her own and a will too, would she be so easily duped?

the cracking cool game. hari prakash (aw khushi called him op later) takes a message from khushi to asr... the one her charade act had miserably failed to convey. the whole menu changed and a chit of paper became a tome of ram charit manas.
khushi has given it... for me... why? asr is incredulous. but hp is very clear with the instructions: not only has khushi  told asr that he needs to read this it's urgent and essential. what... has khushi gone mad, asr is livid, and going bonkers.

but as hp told khushi later, he was gussa, yet kept whatever he'd sent her. maybe a spot of bedtime reading tonight, asr? the man named after the eternal, taking a book that religious people read with reverence, to the atheist... with clear instructions... read it. ram, the ultimate hero of ancient india, some believe the avatar of lord vishnu... and the atheist, nasty yet noble, villain like yet the real hero. ram, i don't know, give me an asr any day. and my book on the ideal hero? well they turned it into a tv serial it seems.

episode 361 a woman a mother a sister a wife

"out flew the web and floated wide, the mirror cracked from side to side, the curse is upon me she cried, the lady of shalott."
~~~ lord tennyson ~~~
what a terrible night in anjali's life.
out flew her dreams, her illusions shattered and cracked her inside, the curse was upon her, before her eyes. a curse she had held aloft and above all else, as her life's greatest blessing. she had given him the place of pati parameshwar, her god. and look how he'd turned into a demon right there. "haan, hain hum bure, bahut bure hain hum," yes, i am bad, very bad am i... the demon screamed. and anjali's eyes went numb.
he raved and admitted killing his own child, planning to murder her brother, his willingness to kill any and everybody for the money, the wealth. i wondered what she'd do, would she call back her illusions to create her perfect universe again? then i saw her hand move.
she went for the jugular. her mangalsutra. flashbacks scrolled: him changing her medicines, scattering glass for her to walk on, her miscarriage. her face scrunched up in disgust, in anger, she seemed to call upon some power hidden deep within. she tugged and tore her mangalsutra.
with one clean movement anjali singh raizada broke her ties with shyam manohar jha and claimed herself back.
it was stunning to witness.
just a string of black beads and gold, so much in it. memories of a tempestuous wedding another night. a man, fire in his eyes, deliberately tying a mangalsutra around his terrified bride's neck. One neat movement and a tie was made that would last a lifetime.
tonight, anjali at last saw in herself what we were shocked to watch her forget. she saw in her a mother. daljeet went deep to unearth anjali's complex set of emotions, thankfully it was led by rage. a rage that burns you bright and taut, the fury of a mother defiled, a wife desecrated.
she was my daughter, my raanisahiba.
don't you dare even speak of her, she is in no way a part of you.
shyam couldn't believe his eyes as his plaything turned into a a powerful opponent. gandhari had taken off the blindfold. enough, shyam, you are not going to dupe her any more. ever again.
anjali's dialogues were crafted well, it allowed her to admit she had been wrong, we heard from shyam how he'd sneak in to meet her, she didn't deny it. and no one judged her either, certainly not her brother, i was proud of him for being above that. for knowing the place of those you love in your life.
this episode reached me more than the 360. it was focused on anjali as it had to be. shyam was not the centre of the scene, he was the instrument i felt, so that we could go into anjali's dilemma and let her make her way back to the circle of love and trust she has for so long misunderstood. the girl who told everyone that they had a "vaham" lived with the most tragic of vahams. a lesson there?
the pain and insanity of it all was consuming her. something had to be done. anjali was never one to take emotional turmoil into herself like khushi and bury it inside. she needed release otherwise it would harm her. i felt terrible for this woman who had made the mistake of loving too much, loving the wrong man.
she chose her outlet. fire.
"jalaa do ise fooq dalo yeh duniya
jalaa do, jalaa do, jalaa do
fooq dalo yeh duniya
mere samne se hata lo yeh duniya"
~~~~ sahir ludhianvi, pyaasa ~~~~

burn it down, this world
burn it, burn it, burn it
blow thsi world down
remove this world from before me

he had killed her child, she made a pyre of all his belongings, his gifts, his memories and poured diesel on it. then threw in a lit match stick. there was no miracle this time, the diesel didn't become water.

yet you could see her slowly burning within, the fire will take a while to die down. i hope the innate strength and stubbornness of anjali which we glimpse at times will assert itself and help her make her world ok again.

she has to do it, he said almost serenely. tonight arnav singh raizada was not going to lose his cool. he who was known for his red hot gussa had ice in his eyes. he knew his duty was with his sister. he had to show her the truth and be there for her when it hit her hard and terrible. he stood at the back and led from there, watching di, observing shyam's every move. he knew he couldn't step in and do this for di.

this was her battle, she had to fight it on her own terms. he worried for her, yet trusted her too, plus his best representative khushi was by her side. hardly any words, very little screen time, yet he is the only image that stays in the mind. the stance, the waiting in the eyes, the striding up to take charge, the running to di now that shyam's gone he can show his worry, the gentlest yet most dependable hug. finally, the keen insight while all looked horrified. let her throw everything into that suitcase and set fire to it. she has to do it.

some say the world will end in fire,
some say ice.
from what i tasted of desire
i hold with those who favour fire.
but if it had to perish twice,
i think i know enough of hate
to say that for destruction ice
is also great
and would suffice.

a robert frost poem, quite a popular one, came to mind.

thoughts

~ i haven't watched jab we met with any concentration, don't remember the scene everyone is referring to. maybe that's why it worked for me. and i try never to ask things like where did the jerry can of kerosene come from, what will happen to the floor and why is she in a synthetic saree next to the fire? LOL

~ shyam was for me un.bear.able. for a short while the day before he was good, but alas.
my heart never quakes with fear at abhaas's acting, it just shuts down, there's so much action and noise. lalit mohan was all praises for him those days... and strangely, never a good word for the male lead's interpretation. which makes the serial what it is.

~ i did think daljeet did a damn good job of further creating anjali singh raizada.

~ beautiful involvement from everyone in the fam. some meaningful lines and role next time please for akash and payalia, creatives.

~ while i'm dying to return to the romancing remarrieds, i would like to see how anjali works with her troubles and gets back. maybe a little less pooja path? little more looking at reality, a la bro.

adapted from a take on crooner.
